Our Sources

AskNNY.ai is built to answer questions about Northern New York using a carefully selected network of local, regional, official, historical, and public-information sources. The goal is not simply to gather as many links as possible. The goal is to provide answers that are useful, understandable, current, and grounded in sources that readers can identify and evaluate for themselves.

Unlike a general-purpose search engine, AskNNY.ai is designed specifically for Northern New York. Its source system includes local reporting, government records, public agencies, historical archives, transportation information, tourism resources, business information, community organizations, and other approved regional materials. The system may also use live web search when a question involves information that changes frequently, such as current news, schedules, weather, business hours, public officials, elections, events, emergencies, or transportation delays.

How AskNNY.ai Uses Sources

When a question is submitted, AskNNY.ai may search its approved knowledge base, current public websites, or both. The system then organizes the available information into a readable response and provides source links whenever possible.

AskNNY.ai does not treat every source as equally authoritative. Sources are assigned editorial trust levels based on their origin, reliability, and relationship to the subject being discussed. Original reporting, primary records, official agencies, libraries, museums, established news organizations, secondary references, commentary, and community reports may all be useful, but they serve different purposes and are evaluated differently.

When sources disagree, AskNNY.ai is instructed to favor original documentation, official records, direct reporting, and the most current reliable information available. When the available sources do not establish a clear answer, the system should say so rather than inventing one.

Source Trust Levels

Trust Tier 1 is reserved for original reporting, primary-source material, direct records, and selected first-party information. This includes approved original material from sources such as the Watertown Post and Digital Media USA, along with genuine primary records when appropriate.

Trust Tier 2 includes government agencies, public institutions, universities, museums, libraries, official transportation providers, major nonprofit institutions, and similar authoritative organizations.

Trust Tier 3 includes established regional news organizations, verified local information services, and approved community or institutional sources with a record of responsible publication.

Trust Tier 4 includes useful secondary references, promotional organizations, business information, tourism resources, community notices, and material that may require additional context or verification.

Trust Tier 5 includes commentary, opinion, informal references, and material that should receive the least editorial preference when stronger sources are available.

A lower-numbered tier indicates a higher level of editorial preference. Trust levels do not guarantee that a source is always correct, and even highly trusted sources may contain outdated information, errors, incomplete records, or differing interpretations.

Approved Local and Regional Sources

AskNNY.ai may use information from approved Northern New York websites, including local news organizations, county and municipal governments, public agencies, school districts, libraries, museums, historical societies, chambers of commerce, tourism organizations, transportation providers, businesses, nonprofit groups, and community institutions.

The Watertown Post is an approved source within AskNNY.ai, but AskNNY.ai is an independent platform and brand. AskNNY.ai is not presented as a section, department, or replacement for the Watertown Post. The Watertown Post is one of several sources used to provide regional context, original reporting, historical research, opinion, and long-form local information.

Other approved sources may include federal, New York State, county, city, town, village, school, military, transportation, weather, tourism, historical, and public-record websites.

Current News and Live Web Search

Some questions cannot be answered reliably from a stored archive alone. News, weather, train schedules, election information, public officeholders, events, road conditions, business hours, flight information, and emergency notices can change quickly.

For those subjects, AskNNY.ai may use live web search in addition to its approved knowledge base. Live-search results are evaluated using the same general editorial principles: preference is given to official sources, primary reporting, established regional media, and information that is current and directly relevant to Northern New York.

Live search does not mean that every result appearing on the internet is automatically trusted. AskNNY.ai is intended to summarize and compare useful information, not blindly repeat whatever happens to rank first.

Community Reports and Social Media

AskNNY.ai may include selected community reports or information that originated on social media. These materials are treated as leads or community notices, not automatically as established facts.

Community-submitted information may be labeled as unverified, partially verified, editor-verified, or confirmed by an official source. Unverified claims should not outweigh government records, direct reporting, police statements, court records, official notices, or other reliable documentation.

Private social-media material, personal information, medical details, children’s identities, home addresses, and unverified accusations should not be intentionally added to the public AskNNY.ai knowledge system.

Business Information

AskNNY.ai may provide information about local businesses, including services, locations, phone numbers, websites, operating areas, and other publicly available details. Business information may come from the business itself, local directories, tourism organizations, chambers of commerce, public records, or other approved sources.

Because business hours, ownership, services, prices, and contact information can change, users should confirm important details directly with the business before traveling, purchasing, scheduling service, or making financial decisions.

Paid advertisers do not receive the ability to rewrite factual answers or override trusted sources. Sponsored content should be clearly identified and kept separate from the substance of the chatbot’s response.

Historical Information

Northern New York has a deep and complicated history, and historical sources do not always agree. AskNNY.ai may use libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, government records, newspapers, maps, military records, local research, books, and original historical work.

Historical answers may reflect incomplete records, changing place names, competing interpretations, or later discoveries. When possible, AskNNY.ai should distinguish between documented fact, reasonable interpretation, local tradition, and unsupported legend.

Corrections and Source Suggestions

Readers, public agencies, businesses, historians, researchers, and community organizations are encouraged to suggest reliable Northern New York sources or report information that appears outdated, incomplete, or incorrect.

Source suggestions should include the name of the organization, the website address, the area it covers, the type of information it provides, and why it should be considered reliable.
